A great journey novel that does a beautiful job paralleling the external and internal journeys taken by the protagonist narrator. The pace and tone are exciting during adventure scenes, rambling and chatty in classic road trip scenes, frenetic when Steinbeck is overloaded by thought and emotion. When theme, plot, tone, and pace all come together to tell the same story it's always an engrossing and enjoyable experience.
